Among Giants:

Among Giants: Councilwoman Marlene Taylor-Crawford and Councilman Austin E. Thompson Jr

Councilwoman Marlene Taylor-Crawford and Councilman Austin E. Thompson Jr. led the City of Lawrenceville with clarity, honesty, and a genuine commitment to the people they served. Their leadership is not measured merely by policy or procedure, but by presence, integrity, and compassion in action. They show what leadership looks like when purpose guides decisions and service leads the way.

I was honored to witness their historic swearing-in four years ago, and just as honored to be present as this chapter of their journey came to a close. This season carries impact. It reminds the community of what becomes possible when leaders believe in the people they serve. They didn’t just occupy seats, they built opportunities, uplifted voices, and helped others believe in a better tomorrow.

Councilwoman Marlene expressed gratitude with humility and grace, thanking the people she served, her family, and everyone who walked beside her. She spoke of her faith, sharing that G-d prepared her for more, and that her calling to serve continues. Councilwoman Marlene closed by sharing a heartfelt text from a former resident who said her kindness and encouragement carried her through one of the hardest moments of her life, and that she is now doing well and moving forward. Councilwoman Marlene reminded everyone that this is what it is all about, and that her work will never be in vain.

Councilman Austin extended warmth and encouragement, acknowledging those grieving loved ones and those pressing forward in hope. He reflected on what it means to be available, to be present, and to stay committed to the people who trusted him. He thanked those who believed in him, supported him, and walked beside him through every challenge. Councilman Austin offered the reminder that a setback can be a setup for a greater comeback, a reflection rooted in resilience.

Members of the community stood to speak, not about accomplishments on paper but about impact. People thanked Councilwoman Marlene Taylor-Crawford and Councilman Austin E. Thompson Jr. for listening and for leading with integrity. Several shared how Councilwoman Marlene’s leadership empowered them to get involved, to believe they belonged in civic spaces, and to know their voices mattered. Others spoke about Councilman Austin’s willingness to be present, to listen, and to make himself available when the community needed him most.

Community members encouraged them both not to be deterred, but to stay determined, because their service lit a path others are now brave enough to walk. The legacy Marlene and Austin leave behind is not just defined by what they accomplished. It lives in the people they inspired and in those they encouraged others to become.

Both leaders acknowledged with honesty and maturity that not every day on the campaign trail was easy. They experienced unkindness, disrespect, and moments that tested their spirits, yet they continued. They led anyway. They served anyway. They stand not defeated but determined. Their faith, their commitment, and their love for this community carry them farther than criticism ever could.

I’m not just their photographer or visual storyteller. They are my friends. I’ve known Marlene for almost twenty years, standing alongside her in the trenches of community work and impact. Over the years, I have come to know Austin through our shared connections in service and advocacy. To witness their purpose and stand in the presence of their impact, I am grateful.

Their journey is not finished. This is not goodbye. This is a breath, a pause, a sacred stillness before whatever comes next. Some may not fully realize what a gift they had in these two, but those who paid attention know their impact continues beyond any single moment and far beyond the title of councilmember.

So until the next time, I will see them around.

Still advocating.

Still showing up.

Still serving with heart.

What an honor it is to stand among giants.
