About the Author
Thomas E. Brown began his public service career in Atlanta as a firefighter before becoming the first African American Fire Chief of DeKalb County. His leadership journey expanded in 1989 when he was appointed Public Safety Director of DeKalb County, overseeing Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Animal Control, 911 Communications, and Emergency Management.
Throughout his career, Brown introduced Community-Oriented Policing Services, led the Police Department to national accreditation through the Commission of Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, and established fire safety programs taught directly in schools—initiatives that led to a significant reduction in residential fire-related deaths. He also spearheaded major capital improvements, including the renovation of the county’s Public Safety Building.
In 2001, Brown was elected Sheriff of DeKalb County, serving four consecutive terms. He later held the distinction of U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Georgia, appointed on October 17, 2022.
His autobiography, Crossing Bridges, documents not only a remarkable professional career spanning more than four decades, but also a deeply personal journey shaped by family, faith, resilience, and leadership forged in moments of crisis.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a native inner-city Atlantan and a product of the Atlanta Public School System. My entire professional career has been dedicated to the public safety of the people of Atlanta and DeKalb County, Georgia. I am also the proud father of two successful adult children and the grandfather of five grandchildren.
What inspired you to become a writer?
I have no desire to become a writer. I only wanted to write my autobiography to leave a legacy for those in my bloodline—to share my story.
Can you share what your latest book is about?
Crossing Bridges is about my rich legacy as a descendant of free people of color who came to America in the 1700s. It tells the story of my parents and siblings, how our life together shaped me as a young man, and most importantly, my professional life—the bridges I crossed, what I learned about leadership, and how those lessons shaped my experiences while making public safety decisions.
