An evening of community, remembrance, and celebration highlighting the legendary Ms. Rubye Neal.
The room slowly dimmed as small lights began to glow throughout the crowd. One by one, attendees lifted the small lights they had been given during the Emerging Light Ceremony, creating a quiet but powerful moment of reflection. In that soft glow, the room felt united, each light representing a story, a legacy, and a shared commitment to remembering the past while guiding the future forward. It was a fitting symbol for the evening, a celebration hosted by The Family Gwinnett that honored the history, culture, and leadership that continues to shape Gwinnett County.
The Family Gwinnett, an organization made up of businesses dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and small business owners grow, brought the community together for its 2026 Annual Black History Program. Through mentorship, collaboration, and resources, the organization works to empower individuals while fostering economic growth and opportunity. That spirit of unity was evident throughout the evening as guests arrived and were greeted by the warmth of familiar faces excited to be part of such a meaningful gathering.
Before the program officially began, attendees enjoyed fellowship throughout the venue. Great food had been prepared for guests as conversations filled the room. Some attendees spent time interacting with vendors while others captured moments through photographs, preserving memories of the evening. The atmosphere reflected a sense of connection, community members coming together not only to celebrate Black history, but also to celebrate one another.
As the program began, several remarkable women were accompanied into the room by members of the Freemasons while their stories and accomplishments were shared with the audience. The room then stood together to sing the Black National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing, setting a powerful and reflective tone for the evening. Throughout the program, several ladies of distinction received awards and recognition for their service and dedication to the community.
Among the honorees was Ms. Rubye Neal of Lawrenceville, Georgia, who received the 2026 Legend Award. Ms. Neal is a respected community volunteer, historian, and preservation advocate who has spent decades preserving Gwinnett County’s Black history. A 1956 graduate of the historic Hooper-Renwick School, the county’s only Black school prior to desegregation, she has been a key voice in ensuring that the stories connected to that school and the community surrounding it are not forgotten. Her dedication to historical preservation and education has helped keep important pieces of Gwinnett’s history alive for future generations.
Ms. Rubye Neal is truly a legend with a rich and powerful legacy, and being in her presence is an honor. She enjoys educating not only the Black community but anyone willing to listen and learn from the stories of her past. Those stories help bridge gaps and answer questions about life in Gwinnett and neighboring counties during times when very little was documented in books. She is a beacon within our community whose light shines knowledge, wisdom, and lived experience on all who are willing to receive it.
Being able to witness this moment was even more meaningful because my granddaughter, who admires Ms. Neal, was also present that evening. Watching her see and experience a living legend in our community reminded me that these moments matter not just for us today, but for the generations that will carry these stories forward.
It was truly an amazing evening filled with poetry, music, fellowship, and meaningful reflection as the community gathered to celebrate and honor the leaders who continue to shape Gwinnett County. As the lights glowed during the Emerging Light Ceremony, it served as a reminder that the stories and legacies being honored that night continue to illuminate the path forward for generations to come.
